Distinguished and Famous people from South West Sydney
🏏 Steve and Mark Waugh
Steve and Mark Waugh attended Panania Public School and East Hills Boys High School before becoming Australian Test cricketers. Their school sporting record was not confined to cricket: Steve also earned a Combined High Schools football Blue. Both received cricket Blues in 1984, and Mark progressed through Bankstown-Canterbury's district side into state cricket. Their later international careers made the twins two of Australia's most recognisable players, but the local connection is a substantial shared upbringing in south-western Sydney, with school sport and district cricket providing the setting before national selection.
🏊 Ian Thorpe
Ian Thorpe grew up at Milperra and attended Milperra Public School and East Hills Boys High before continuing his education at home. He reached international prominence as a teenage swimmer, winning the world 400-metre freestyle title in Perth at fifteen. At the Sydney Olympics he won the 400 metres and helped Australia to memorable relay victories. His Olympic career eventually brought five gold medals across Sydney and Athens. Those performances grew from a childhood and school life in south-western Sydney, connecting a local district with one of Australia's best-known sporting careers.
🗳️ Dai Le
Dai Le's Australian life included school years at Cabramatta after her family arrived as refugees from Vietnam. She later worked for the Fairfield Champion and in broadcasting, then entered local government at Fairfield. Her election to federal Parliament for Fowler in 2022 added national representation to a career already grounded in the district. Journalism, council work and an electorate covering suburbs including Cabramatta, Fairfield and Liverpool give her several distinct local connections. The story joins migration and education with the practical work of reporting on, serving and representing a community.
